Penicillin is known as wonder drug.It was the first known drug,discovered.Alexander Fleming is credited for it's discovery,but it was first noticed by a french student,Ernest Duchesne,in 1896.Later it was re-discovered by Alexander Fleming working at st.Mary's Hospital in London in 1928.During his experiment,a plate culture of Staphylococcus had been contaminated by a blue-green mold and the adjacent bacteria to the mold were dissolved.Then he grew the mold in a pure culture and found that it produced a substance that killed a number of disease causing bacteria.Then in 1929 Fleming published the results,naming the substance penicillin.
Penicillin works by interfering with the formation of the bacteria's cell wall while it is growing,weakening the wall and killing the bacteria.It is used to treat infections like ear infections.
But despite of its usefulness it's use can make birth control pills less effective,resulting in pregnancy.Penicillin also don't treat a viral infection such as flu.
Penicillin should be taken carefully,your doctor must be given informations about the drugs used:e.g.methotrexate or probenecid etc.
